Flynn contact, Winston visit among Dolphins' activity

BY SEAN DONOVAN

The league year started Tuesday, and teams were allowed to begin contacting available free agents. With that, the Dolphins made a few transactions and had some contact with high profile free agents.

Miami still awaits the decision of free agent quarterback Peyton Manning, who met with the Dolphins' coaching staff on Monday.

Team contacts Matt Flynn

The Dolphins and Browns appear to be going head-to-head to sign free agent quarterback Matt Flynn, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. The two teams are expected to exchange contract offers with Flynn's agent today or tomorrow. Miami will negotiate with Flynn while still in pursuit of Manning, though it's believed that their chances to sign Manning took a hit when their best receiving weapon, Brandon Marshall, was traded to the Bears.

The Seahawks were believed to be in pursuit of Flynn's services as well, but it does not appear that they are in the running at this point. It has been reported that they are fielding a visit from former Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne this week.

Eric Winston visits

Free agent offensive tackle Eric Winston paid the Dolphins a visit on Tuesday. Winston was a surprise release by the Texans and is known to be one of the better right tackles in the league. Miami is looking to fill that position after the poor performance and subsequent release of Marc Colombo. According to Pro Football Focus, Winston is the sixth-highest rated right tackle in the league.

Robinson, Marshall on radar

Miami is one of a few teams inquiring about Dallas free agent wide receiver Laurent Robinson, according to multiple media outlets. Robinson had a breakout year for the Cowboys in 2011, where he caught 11 touchdowns, including two in a Thanksgiving Day matchup with Miami.

Cardinals free agent cornerback Richard Marshall annouced via Twitter that he was visiting Miami in the next day or so. Marshall started nine games last season and caught three interceptions. He would be a solid choice as a nickel back behind starters Vontae Davis and Sean Smith.

Team retains Murtha, other reserves

The Dolphins signed a few players to one year contracts on Tuesday, including key backup tackle Lydon Murtha. Also signed were defensive end Phillip Merling, linebacker Austin Spitler and tight end Jeron Mastrud.
