Norv Turner could be on a business trip at MetLife

San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner won't be "San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner" for very long. After getting fired by the Chargers in two weeks, he'll likely become some needy team's offensive coordinator by the end of January.

The Tony Sparano experiment didn't work out in 2012 for the Jets, and Sparano will likely make his New York exit during what looks to be an oncoming housecleaning by the Jets' brass following the season. The Chargers visit the Jets Sunday in a matchup between two reeling teams that used to be among the conference's best.

The consensus on Turner, who is an elite offensive mind, is that he's not head coach material. But that doesn't discount his offensive prowess. When asked about his openness to taking an offensive coordinator job, Turner told Jets reporters, "I like coaching. I want to coach."

"If I continue to coach, I want to be in a good situation, a place where you have an opportunity to win, and be in a situation that there are coaches I’ve worked with and been around," Turner said Wednesday, via NewYorkJets.com. "... If there’s something that is exciting, you’d consider it."

The Jets, who owe recently-demoted quarterback Mark Sanchez more than $8 million next year, were reportedly interested in Turner's services at the end of the 2011 season, but the Chargers ended up not firing him. He'll get fired this time around.

It's certainly early to be talking specifics on personnel in New York, especially since Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum is on the hot seat himself, but Turner may be as good of a fit as the Jets will find.
