Rex gives linebacker Demario Davis nod to start

BY NICK ST. DENIS

As linebacker Bart Scott's production and ability diminished through the 2011 season, the New York Jets were primed to begin grooming his replacement.

Scott was released last month, and Monday, Jets coach Rex Ryan said Davis will start next to fellow insider 'backer David Harris when the 2013 commences.

"He's our No. 1 WILL [linebacker] on our depth chart," Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News. "... Clearly Demario is a guy we feel really good about."

Davis was on the field for 315 snaps in 2012, according to Pro Football Focus, with a bulk of his work coming in Weeks 6 through 12. In that span, he amassed 21 tackles, six quarterback hurries and one quarterback hit.

Ryan lauded Davis, who was taken in the third round out of Arkansas State, for his leadership abilities last summer. Now, Davis will have the chance to prove Ryan right, or wrong, to the rest of us.
