Testaverde says Tebow 'can be a top QB' in NFL

BY NICK ST. DENIS

There's something to be said about former New York Jets star quarterbacks talking up current or recent Jets signal-callers who are highly-criticized by everyone else.

Usually it's Joe Namath touting Mark Sanchez. But now Vinny Testaverde is in the mix, lauding Tim Tebow, who was acquired by the New England Patriots Monday. (photo: Matt Britt, Flickr)

"I'm not saying he's going to light the world on fire, but he'll have a chance to show the improvements and strides he's made," Testaverde told ESPN New York. "This is great news. I'm glad he's getting another shot to show people he has improved.

"I would've been disappointed if he didn't get a chance. Despite what a lot of people say, I think he can be a top quarterback in the league."

Testaverde worked with Tebow this offseason and thinks the former Florida Gator can still revive his career -- and that New England is the perfect destination for Tebow to do it. Tebow will work under his former head coach Josh McDaniels while soaking in everything future Hall of Famer Tom Brady exudes. Having a little wisdom dropped on him by Bill Belichick can't hurt, either.

While Tebow becoming a "top quarterback" is an extremely major stretch, New England is as good a place as any to hone QB skills. However, if he wants to play anytime soon, it's as bad a place as any. There's zero chance the Patriots will take Brady off the field under any circumstance not involving an injury, and even in that case, Ryan Mallett is still ahead of Tebow on the depth chart.
