Matt Simms continues to cling to Jets' payroll

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Despite many shifts atop the New York Jets' quarterback depth chart, reserve signal-caller Matt Simms has found himself on the team's active roster or practice squad for the better part of the last three years.

Make that four--for now.

The team announced it has signed Simms to an extension, which will prevent him from becoming an exclusive rights free agent in the coming months.

Simms, who originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012, saw some action against the Kansas City Chiefs this year while Michael Vick took a few plays off. Geno Smith was on the bench that game.

As Smith's backup in 2013, Simms completed 16 of 31 for 156 yards, a touchdown and an interception in three games. He looks poised for a third-string gig with Gang Green in 2015.

The Jets also announced they signed kicker Andrew Furney, linebacker Mario Harvey, defensive back Keith Lewis, cornerback Dashaun Phillips, offensive lineman Brent Qvale, running back Daryl Richardson, punter Jake Schum and linebacker Chris Young to reserve/future contracts.
