Simms donning new uniform, but still fighting for reps

Matt Simms is getting more reps now that he's with the Buffalo Bills, but his place on the depth chart hasn't changed much from his time with the Jets.

On a day where the 26-year-old told reporters (via ESPN.com) his plan to leave Gang Green for a shot in Buffalo "paid off" and that he's "happy to be here now," his old/new coach made it clear that the QB competition in Buffalo is a three-man situation.

"(The competition) is what it is right now," Rex Ryan said via BuffaloBills.com. "Three guys are going to be working at it, they’re splitting the reps. Don’t kid yourself, Matt will get opportunities. Will he get as many as the top three guys, probably not.

"One thing about Matt, I know he’ll take advantage of the opportunities he gets and I’m not saying he can’t make this team."

Simms, who saw only four games worth of work in his two years in New York, is up against three signal-callers with far more experience -- E.J. Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor -- and is likely competing for the third-string spot he held while previously under Ryan.

Matt Simms continues to cling to Jets' payroll

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Despite many shifts atop the New York Jets' quarterback depth chart, reserve signal-caller Matt Simms has found himself on the team's active roster or practice squad for the better part of the last three years.

Make that four--for now.

The team announced it has signed Simms to an extension, which will prevent him from becoming an exclusive rights free agent in the coming months.

Simms won't hit free agency, extends stay with Jets

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Geno Smith will enter the 2014 football season as the New York Jets' starting quarterback, and at least for the summer, one of his backups will remain in place.

The Jets extended quarterback Matt Simms, who was slated for free agency in March, for another year, according to the NY Daily News. Simms spent the 2013 season as the team's first reserve to the rookie Smith while Mark Sanchez sat with a shoulder injury.

Sanchez is expected to be released prior to his $2 million roster bonus in March.

Smith, Simms uncertain of their statuses next week

BY NICK ST. DENIS

Geno Smith's regression was still stuck on cruise control Sunday in the New York Jets' season-deflating loss to the Miami Dolphins, and it landed him on the bench by halftime.

After helping the Jets' helpless offense to a measly two first downs, the rookie signal-caller was pulled in favor of backup Matt Simms, who didn't fare a whole lot better.

Smith isn't sure he'll get the start next week. Neither is Simms.

Simms, Bell make strong cases for Jets' roster

BY NICK ST. DENIS

The stage was set for Matt Simms and Kahlil Bell. It was a small stage by normal standards, but a big one for the two New York Jet reserves.

With quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Greg McElroy sidelined to injury and rookie Geno Smith kept away for insurance, the runway was clear for Simms Thursday night in the Jets' preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Simms played the entire game, connecting on 33 of 44 passes for 285 yards and helping his case for the third-string gig -- or maybe making the case for the Jets to carry four quarterbacks.

Jets sign Phil Simms' son to be fifth QB on roster

Giants legend Phil Simms has another son in the NFL. Sorta.

Former Tennessee quarterback Matt Simms, who had a tryout over the weekend during the Jets' rookie camp, was signed by New York Sunday, according to ESPN New York.

Matt Simms is now slated as the Jets' fifth signal-caller behind Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy and G.J. Kinne. So, it's not likely he'll see time in a preseason game, let alone action late in training camp.

Jets coach Rex Ryan complimented the former Volunteer's "arm talent" when addressing the media over the weekend, adding that Simms "obviously" has the "pedigree."

Phil Simms has always been a defender of Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.

This week, Simms' son will get an opportunity -- a miniscule one -- to be one of Sanchez's backups' backups. Or one of his backup's backup's backups. Or something.

Former Tennessee quarterback Matt Simms, son of the former Giants signal-caller and current CBS analyst, was one of 23 "tryout players" invited to work out with 10 undrafted free agents in the Jets' upcoming rookie minicamp this weekend.

Former Penn State defensive back D'Anton Lynn, son of Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn, will also participate in the camp as an undrafted free agent. The Jets signed him Sunday following the final round of the draft.
