A day after ripping the backup quarterback crew for its play so far this summer, Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone did more than just talk.
After a string of disappointing outings in the team's first four preseason games, Buffalo parted ways with third-year signal-caller Thad Lewis Tuesday, replacing him with veteran Jordan Palmer.
Lewis, who went 2-3 for the Bills last season filling in for E.J. Manuel, completed only 50 percent of his passes and threw two interceptions in his four appearances this season. Palmer, who's seen even less time as a starter in his seven years in the league, was cut by the Chicago Bears Sunday.

Carpenter Bills' kicker at least one more week
BY NICK ST. DENIS
The Buffalo Bills signed veteran kicker Dan Carpenter to fill in for the injured sixth-round rookie Dustin Hopkins, and since, Carpenter has made a good case for a longer-term stay.
Carpenter has made his last 10 kicks after missing his very first attempt as a Bill. He'll get an opportunity Thursday night to add to that streak, as Bills coach Doug Marrone said Tuesday Hopkins still isn't ready to see the field.
“I think we’re still working on the kickoff part of it,” Marrone said, via BuffaloBills.com. ”We’re still a little bit day to day with that. As far as PATs and field goals I don’t think there’s a problem.”

Injury Report: Byrd listed as doubtful
BY NICK ST. DENIS
Jairus Byrd will likely be a no-go when his Buffalo Bills open the regular season.
The Bills' star/drama-stirring safety is officially listed as doubtful for Sunday's bout with the New England Patriots, according to the NFL's official injury report. Byrd has been limited in practice this week with a foot ailment.
Cornerback Stephon Gilmore (wrist), kicker Dustin Hopkins (groin) and offensive lineman Doug Legursky (knee) were placed in the "out" column, as expected. All three were non-participants in practice Friday.

Lindell departs 32 points short of Bills record
BY NICK ST. DENIS
Rian Lindell needed just a handful of field goals and a few more extra points to become the Buffalo Bills' all-time scoring leader. He'll have to settle for No. 2 behind former kicker Steve Christie.
The Bills announced Monday they released the 36-year-old kicker. Lindell amassed 980 points in 10 years with Buffalo after spending his first three seasons in Seattle.
His departure from the Bills, however, was pretty much imminent after the team drafted Dustin Hopkins in the sixth round of this year's draft.

For safety reasons, Bills go defense early on Day 3
BY DAN BEGNOCHE
While the Buffalo Bills spent the majority of the first two days focusing on the offensive side of the ball, Saturday was about bolstering the secondary.

Williams, a 6-foot safety out of Nevada, fulfills the "versatility" trait that Pettine is looking for in his crew, able to play all over the backfield, including corner.
