Rex feels bad for Amaro, 'but I wasn't afraid of him'

Rex Ryan just couldn't help himself.

New York Jets tight end Jace Amaro was placed on injured reserve Tuesday due to a shoulder injury and will miss the rest of the season.

His former coach, now Buffalo Bills coach Ryan, said Tuesday he felt bad for Amaro--but not without taking a parting shot at the second-year end, who earlier this year questioned team accountability with the Jets last season.

“Jace is a good kid. He just made stupid comments,” Ryan said, via the New York Post. “He’s a good kid and I feel bad that he can’t do it. He’s a talented guy, but I wasn’t exactly afraid of him.”

Still no Harvin for Jets, but Amaro cleared to hit

The New York Jets' most explosive player had yet to test his ankle Wednesday since spraining it last Sunday in a loss to the Minnesota Vikings. A day later, it looks like he's still staying off it.

Thursday, wide receiver Percy Harvin caught balls from the jugs machine for a bit but ended up on the stationary bike rather than in position drills, according to Darryl Slater of NJ.com.

Meanwhile, it's iffy how much practice work Gang Green's best player (on either side of the ball), defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, will get toward the end of this week, as he's still nursing his turf toe ailment.

Back on offense, tight end Jace Amaro has been cleared for contact.

Amaro finds groove in regular season dress rehearsal

Friday night, New York Jets tight end Jace Amaro showed the team what it was hoping to see when it took him in the second round of this year's draft.

Amaro's 6-foot-5 presence was felt in the middle of the field, as the rookie hauled in four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown against the New York Giants.

He's faced a pretty steep learning curve entering the pro game but looked the part of an NFL starter running routes in the Jets' third preseason game.

The New York Jets' two most important first-year players are learning just that, as first round safety Calvin Pryor and second round tight end Jace Amaro both sustained injuries over the weekend.

According to the NY Post, Jets coach Rex Ryan confirmed Sunday Pryor suffered a concussion the day before and will sit until he goes through league protocol.

New York Jets rookie tight end Jace Amaro had a lot of reading to do this offseason, though the learning has just begun.

In absorbing Marty Mornhinweg's West Coast-style playbook over the past month, the Texas Tech product had a study buddy in rookie quarterback Tajh Boyd, who was regularly quizzing Amaro on the fly in the cafeteria and hotel.

“He would just throw different plays out there,” Amaro said last week, via NJ.com.

There's little doubt rookie tight end Jace Amaro will boost the New York Jets' pass-catching department, which was rather mediocre in 2013.

Amaro's impact in the run game, however, is yet to be determined. The Texas Tech product is raw in that regard, though he's confident he'll be able to pick up the slack in Marty Mornhinweg's tailback-friendly system.

“That’s something that I didn’t do in college, but it’s not something that’s a problem or anything," Amaro told CBS New York Friday of his run-blocking acumen. "I’ve always been a great blocker and I’ve always been really strong.

In round one, Rex Ryan got a new toy for his defensive backfield. With their first pick on day two, the New York Jets added a weapon for the other side of the ball.

With the No. 49 overall pick, the Jets selected Texas Tech tight end Jace Amaro. Amaro gives the Jets offense -- and whichever quarterback starts for it -- an immediate receiving upgrade at the tight end spot.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound former Red Raider set the NCAA single season record for receiving yards with 1,352 in 2013, also earning consensus All-American and first team All-Big 12 honors.
