General manager Doug Whaley said earlier this week the Buffalo Bills would not be making any "big splash" moves during the free agency period.
If Day 1 is any indication, he wasn't kidding.
Buffalo was relatively quiet on the acquisition front following the official start to the season Tuesday, though the same can't be said for the team's departures. The team saw three-time Pro Bowler Jairus Byrd bail to New Orleans on a six-year deal, and Whaley canned backup quarterback Kevin Kolb after he spent all of last season on Injured Reserve.

Unsurprisingly, Bills hand Kolb his walking papers

It's hardly surprising, but news, nonetheless.
The Buffalo Bills released quarterback Kevin Kolb Tuesday, according to ESPN.com, and saved $3 million in cap space in the process. They also avoided paying him the $1 million roster bonus he was owed Thursday.
Kolb was brought in last summer to compete for the starting job but was lost for the year to a concussion he sustained in the preseason.

Bills sign Leinart, could start ex-bust Week 1

Picture this: former Arizona Cardinals first-round bust Matt Leinart taking meaningful snaps for the Buffalo Bills Week 1 against the New England Patriots.
Sorry for that image. But it could happen.
The Bills signed the ex-USC Trojan Sunday in response to Kevin Kolb's reported career-threatening concussion and the uncertainty regarding rookie E.J. Manuel's opening day status. Buffalo also traded for former Detroit Lions backup quarterback Thaddeus Lewis.

Kolb's stock dwindling thanks to another injury

Buffalo Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb can't catch a break.
Recently returning from a fluke knee injury, the Bills were hoping to get Kolb a solid amount of snaps Saturday with rookie E.J. Manuel on the sidelines with a knee injury of his own.
The seven-year vet lasted less than a quarter, sustaining a potential concussion on the team's second offensive drive and leaving the game after only four pass attempts in Buffalo's eventual 30-7 loss to the Washington Redskins.

Manuel done auditioning, stage clear for Kolb

E.J. Manuel had been quickly trending toward a Week 1 start thanks to improving play, high upside and the struggles of veteran Kevin Kolb.

The first-round signal-caller out of Florida State had knee surgery Sunday morning. He injured the knee in the team's preseason win over the Minnesota Vikings Friday night.

Bills a step closer to giving keys to E.J. Manuel

The Buffalo Bills drafted E.J. Manuel to be the quarterback of the (near and long-term) future. The future is looking more and more like now.
Manuel has been trending toward an opening day start since the beginning of training camp, and Friday night's preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings certainly didn't impede. The first-round rookie stepped in in the second half to connect on 10 of 12 passing attempts for 97 yards and a touchdown.
Veteran Kevin Kolb, who is battling Manuel for the starting job, spent the first half getting booed after throwing an interception on his second attempt.

Bills GM says QB choice is totally up to Marrone

According to multiple reports from the second day of Bills training camp, rookie E.J. Manuel may have gained some ground on veteran Kevin Kolb in the team's quarterback competition.
One person you can be sure who noticed is coach Doug Marrone.
While the new coach has been spending much of his time with the offensive line thus far, his focus won't be fully diverted from the team's battle under center. In fact, the final say on who ultimately starts Week 1 versus the Patriots will be his decision, and his alone.

But while Johnson agreed after practice that the two are starting to build rapport, he emphasized that it's still early, and that one day's worth of work isn't going to cut it the long run.

E.J. Manuel's presence 'doesn't scare' Kevin Kolb

Before joining the Buffalo Bills, Kevin Kolb was well-aware the team wanted to take a quarterback early in the 2013 NFL Draft.
"I knew it was in the plans," Kolb said Tuesday. Obviously, he signed regardless.

Nix, Marrone confident Kolb is a good fit for Bills

Monday, Buffalo Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb sounded pretty excited about getting another shot to prove his worth in the NFL.
Buffalo's brass sounded equally excited.
Kolb, a six-year vet, holds a 28/25 touchdown-to-interception ratio and has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes in his career. And while many associate the 28-year-old's time in the league with harsh scrutiny and even harsher hits in the backfield, Buffalo's leaders told reporters they see a valued veteran with proven game experience.

Kolb looking forward to not getting sacked so much

Kevin Kolb just hopes to stay on his feet a little more this time around.
The former Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals quarterback signed with the Buffalo Bills this offseason and is looking forward to playing in front of an offensive line that doesn't resemble a sieve.
In 15 games with the Cardinals during 2011 and 2012, Kolb was sacked on 11.6 percent of his drop backs (57 times, according to The Buffalo News). Arizona boasted arguably the worst pass-protection unit in the NFL over that span. (photo: AZKodiak, Flickr)
