Marrone: Orton gives Bills 'the best chance to win'

The Buffalo Bills will not being going back to second-year quarterback E.J. Manuel--at least not this week.

Veteran Kyle Orton, who replaced the benched Manuel after four weeks this season, will again get the nod when the Bills travel to face the rival New York Jets Sunday.

"Right now I'm sticking with Kyle (Orton), we'll go with who gives us the best chance to win," Bills coach Doug Marrone said, via the team's official Twitter account.

Orton full of TDs, Jets full of turnovers in Bills' win

Buffalo Bills quarterback Kyle Orton found the end zone a lot Sunday, while the New York Jets' turnover-prone QB tandem found the Bills a lot.

Orton threw four touchdown passes as the Bills beat down the reeling Jets, who were treated to six turnovers--three from Geno Smith and three more from Michael Vick--from their top two signal-callers.

The Bills won, 43-23, improving to 5-3 and handing the Jets (1-7) their seventh consecutive loss.

Watkins: 'Leader' Orton 'what we need in veteran QB'

Journeyman quarterback Kyle Orton connected with rookie receiver Sammy Watkins on a two-yard touchdown pass with seconds left in the Buffalo Bills' ugly-but-glorious 17-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Orton, who threw another scoring strike to Watkins earlier in the game, made quite an impression on the young pass-catcher.

“He’s a leader,” Watkins said after the game, via BuffaloBills.com. “He knows what he’s doing with the ball. He puts us in the greatest situations. He knows how to help us out on the field, put us in different areas. That’s what we need in a veteran quarterback.”

Orton, Bills will need to commit to run against Detroit

Buffalo's starting quarterback may have changed, but the offensive gameplan will remain the same: Run the ball.

In his first press conference since his promotion, veteran Kyle Orton was asked a lot of personal questions about the move -- if he's rusty, how confident he feels with the playbook, even what he said to now-backup signal-caller E.J. Manuel following the announcement (check out his answer here).

When asked about how he plans to beat the league's No. 1 overall defense, however, his answer had little do with his upcoming performance and everything to do with the effectiveness of his running back corps.

K.O.'ed: Marrone benches Manuel in favor of Orton

After only 14 career starts and back-to-back losses where he's continued to struggle with his accuracy, Buffalo Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel will officially be riding the pine Sunday in Detroit.

The roster move was reportedly made midday Monday, with coach Doug Marrone promoting veteran signal-caller Kyle Orton to the starting role.

Marrone was careful not to put the entire blame of the team's offensive under-production on the shoulders of the young quarterback, though he admitted that his performance has not been strong enough to lead the unit.

Orton prepared to be 'sounding board' for Manuel

There was plenty of shuffling going on among the Buffalo Bills' quarterback crew in the final week of the preseason. The bottom line, however, remains the same: E.J. Manuel is the starter.

The depth chart has seen six roster moves in the past eight days, the first being the release of Dennis Dixon Aug. 25. That came with the signing of veteran Jordan Palmer, followed by the release of Thad Lewis. As quick as he came, Palmer was history, and Jeff Tuel was also waived. 

Now, the squad features 10-year journeyman Kyle Orton as Manuel's backup, with Tuel brought back for the tertiary practice squad role.
